Under 20’s Award Winners Have Senior Ambitions

Oct 23, 2019 by

A trio of Brisbane Strikers award winners are aiming to build on their stand-out seasons with increased contributions to the senior set-up in 2020.

Fullback Lloyd Cabilan, goalkeeper Tomi Mesaric and striker Tana Entrop claimed the awards on offer for the club’s Under 20’s team at their annual Presentation Evening at Perry Park last Friday night.

Cabilan was recognised as the Player of the Year, Mesaric as the Player’s Player of the Year and Entrop as the Golden Boot for the team which finished the season in fourth position in the NPL Queensland Under 20’s competition.

And, while all three players earned playing time with Owen Bakers’ senior side this season, they all aspire to furthering their input next year.

Cabilan expressed his intention to continue to put himself forward as a first team option.

“Obviously I feel very honoured to win the Player of the Year award,” he said.

“It’s a big confidence boost to know the coach has recognised my work and how I played this year.”

“But I’m looking forward now to next year as well. I want to break into the first team on a more consistent basis and will be bringing forward what I learned this year with the minutes I did get.”

Goalkeeper Mesaric said he too is aiming to further his senior minutes in 2020, but acknowledged awaiting opportunities for gloveman requires patience.

“I feel really happy I was part of the team this year and honoured to be recognised by my teammates,” Mesaric said.

“It is always a goal to play as much first team as I can. I learned a lot this year – especially around the mental side of the game – and I think I will be stronger when the opportunity comes.”

“Of course, as a goalkeeper there is only one spot available and I was behind Bon Scott, who I feel was the best goalkeeper in the NPL in all of Australia this year.”

“But I learned a lot from that and I will continue to do the work in training and in the games so that I can put myself in a position to step up when asked.”

Entrop, who netted 12 goals this season to be recognised as the team’s leading goal scorer this season, said thathard work and consistency is the key to earning a place in the senior team.

“I got a few minutes in the senior this year and that was a good experience,” Entrop said.

“The ambition now is to keep going and take that extra step. I need to score more goals and also keep improving in everything I do.”

“But it is all about working hard every day and being a bit patient for that chance – and that’s something I intend to do.”

Brisbane Strikers Under 20’s coach David Provan, who also serves as an assistant to the senior team, said the award-winning trio should be proud of their 2019 campaigns.

“All three of the boys really took some big steps forward this year. They deserve their success and showed they are players to watch for the future,” Provan said.

“Lloyd worked very hard on his game and also balancing the work between the Under 20’s and the seniors – whatever was asked of him he delivered and that is the sort of attitude that will take him far.”

“For me Tomi really showed his leadership qualities this year – on and off the field – as one of the older players in a very young team. It was a very important year for him in that respect.”

“And, Tana also showed great things this year. In the back end of the season, when the chips were down a little bit, he was still working hard and scoring goals and that is something you want to see in your attackers.”

Provan added that the highlight of his season was the number of players that proved themselves capable of playing vital roles in the senior team.

“I remember looking at the bench in the FFA Cup Semi Final and it was full of Under 20’s players,” Provan recalled.

“That is something that will stay with me for a long time and was a very proud moment, not only for myself, but for the club as well.”

“The pathway at this club is certainly there for any player that wants to work hard for it,” he concluded.
