Brisbane Strikers Academy Technical Director Nacho Ferrer has praised the Brisbane Strikers Under 14 team following their weekend Grand Final triumph.

The Under 14’s defeated Lions FC in their NPL Queensland age group decider at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday, winning in a penalty shoot-out after scores were locked 1-1 at full-time.

Seth Renjifo netted Brisbane Strikers’ sole goal of the contest immediately prior to half-time before Lions levelled in the second stanza to force extra time and penalties.

In the penalty shoot-out, goalkeeper Van Francis made two saves to help seal the win – including a decisive stop with the final attempt of the shoot-out.

The Brisbane Strikers Academy teams are overseen by Technical Director Nacho Ferrer, who previously worked with the world famous Real Madrid CF Academy in his native Spain.

He said the Brisbane Strikers Under 14’s can be very proud of their achievement to lift the trophy.

“The team intended to play the Grand Final in the same manner they have been playing the whole season and didn’t take any shortcuts to win,” Ferrer said.

“They players took risks and responsibilities in equal measure and worked through the periods in the game where the stress saw performances drop.”

“But that is part of the learning process. Our players are learning to compete while always trying to play smart football in the Brisbane Strikers methodology.”

He said the Under 14’s achievements in building their understanding and talents through the year as indicative of the continuing advance of the Brisbane Strikers Academy program.

“The Under 14’s squad has been a role model for everyone else within the Brisbane Strikers Academy this year,” he explained.

“They have learned the football concepts and have received admiration for the sort of football they are playing.”

“We want to develop smart players at this club that can respond to game situations. Adaptability and unpredictability are essential concepts in our game model,” Ferrer concluded.

The win is the first for a Brisbane Strikers Academy team in the National Premier Leagues competition.
