Strikers share the points away to the champions

The Brisbane Strikers were held to a draw away from home against 2019 NPL Champions Gold Coast Knights in a match where both sides defences shone.

Coming into the game Strikers were looking to bounce back from a midweek defeat to top of the table Lions FC while Knights were hoping to build on a strong 3-1 win against Capalaba a week earlier.

The game began tightly with both sides came close to breaking the deadlock in the early exchanges with Harrison Sawyer heading just wide for Gold Coast Knights before long-range efforts from Scott Halliday and Chris Maher off target.

Proceedings suddenly sprang into life as a perfect long ball from Matt Richardson sent Ethan Docherty through on goal before the midfielder was taken down by Knights Emlyn Wellsomore.

Wellsmore was subsequently sent-off for his challenge and Fraser Hills slotted home the resulting penalty to give Strikers the lead.

It seemed certain that Strikers would take their lead into the half time break however just one minute after the deadlock was broke Knights equalised through a Max Brown header.

After the break Strike unsurprisingly took control of the game but struggled to break down the 10 men of Knights who defended valiantly.

The match finished level at 1-1 with Strikers set to enjoy a well-earned rest with a bye next this weekend.

“I think that we played well enough to take the three points leading into the break but we are disappointed that we couldn’t capitalise against 10 men,” Striker fullback Jacob Sauverain said.

“Knights came out very strong to try and take the win in the second half but we still held strong defensively and produced some nice passages of play and unfortunately we couldn’t get the finishing touch right for a goal.

“Yes it has been very full-on recently for us, this break will do us well I feel, we will rest, recover, and come back stronger.”

45’- Brisbane Strikers – Ethan Docherty was brought down by Emlyn Wellsmore for a penalty which Fraser Hills slotted into the bottom corner.

45+2’- Gold Coast Knights – A perfectly weighted delivery found the head of Max Brown who headed past Brendan White to equalise.

Man of the Match

Michael McGowan was named Man of the Match after a commanding display at the heart of the Strikers defence. The veteran centre-back has led by example throughout the season, continuing to be a crucial part of Owen Baker’s side.
