Strikers Return A “No-Brainer” For McGowan In 2020

Nov 26, 2019 by

The unrivalled structures of Brisbane Strikers’ operations has made the decision to return for a third season at Perry Park a “no-brainer” for highly-regarded defender Michael McGowan.

The 32-year-old Scot has committed to Brisbane Strikers for another year following a stand-out 2019 campaign, where he lead by example as the most senior member of the backline.

The imposing centre-half’s contributions were underscored in the back half of the season – his return to the starting line-up in late April following injury and family commitments in Scotland coinciding with the club’s rampant close to 2019.

McGowan said he was delighted to spend another season in the club’s famous yellow-and-blue strip.

“It feels good to have signed and it’s nice to get these things sorted early,” McGowan explained.

“There was never a doubt in my mind about where I would play in 2020 with the way the season went last season with such a strong finish and the cup run.”

“I am very happy at Brisbane Strikers and their professionalism really made the decision to re-sign a no-brainer for me.”

McGowan’s return in the backline has been widely welcomed on social media by Brisbane Strikers supporters, who have reveled in his no-nonsense reputation in his 55 games to date for the club.

Those exploits also drew praise from outside the club in 2019, with Football Queensland naming him in their NPL Queensland Team of the Season.

However, McGowan said such accolades are not what drives him to perform week-in, week-out.

“I don’t seek personal glory or personal awards – I just want to contribute and help the club achieve its aims and be as competitive as possible,” he said.

Repaying The Faith Shown By The Club

Prior to joining Brisbane Strikers for the 2018 season, McGowan had tasted National Premier Leagues football elsewhere in Queensland and Victoria, in addition to stints in local Brisbane competition.

This followed his formative years in his native Scotland where he played for a number of semi-professional teams including Hamilton Academical, Airdrie United and Albion Rovers.

He explained that the settled nature of Brisbane Strikers and the support they give the playing group is unmatched by anything else he has experienced locally.

“There are not many teams in Queensland that would be comparable to what Strikers have got,” McGowan said.

“The set-up, the facilities, the number of coaches, the quality of the training is right up there with any of the teams I played with in Scotland.

He added, “The way the clubs support the players and the little one percenters – Strikers does them all.”

“I’ve played for a few clubs since I’ve been in Australia, but Strikers is the only team I have ever come back for and that really tells its own story.”

“As a player, when the club is doing so much for you, it makes you want to show you are worth it and repay that faith they have put in you.”

Coach Highlights Experience & Leadership

Brisbane Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker said that securing McGowan’s services for the 2020 campaign was high on his off-season to-do list as he seeks to recapture the steely defensive resolve of previous years.

“I’m delighted Michael has re committed to our club for another season. He will play a vital role in helping our team evolve in 2020,” Baker said.

“Michael is our most experienced player and is a part of the nucleus to our strongest team. He brings great balance by being a left-footed defender and shows the tough attributes required to defend well.”

He added that McGowan will again take a leadership role within the team after leading by example as the oldest player in last year’s squad.

“He is an outstanding team player that is respected by everybody at the club. He truly is a leader in all senses of the word both on and off the park.”

More Signings To Come

Brisbane Strikers will announce further 2020 squad signings in coming days as Baker locks in the key pieces for his tilt at a return to finals football in 2020.
