Strikers optimistic about Gold Coast away day

Aug 28, 2020 by

Fresh off their 2-2 draw with Olympic FC at Perry Park on Tuesday night, the Brisbane Strikers return to NPL QLD action tomorrow night away from home against Gold Coast United.

United have been in mixed form in recent weeks, losing their last two matches to Redlands United and Brisbane Roar Youth respectively.

“Gold Coast United away is a very difficult fixture,” says Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker.

“We need to be prepared for anything, as on their day, they have quality players that can hurt any team.”

Indeed, those recent results for Gold Coast may be attributed to key injuries in the side, sidelining marquee names including former A-League, Strikers, and New Zealand international star Shane Smeltz.

“Yeah look they have quality players who have played at the top and have played at the top for a reason,” says Strikers defender Liam Cosgrove.

“We will have to monitor them closely but I’m confident that we’ll be up for the challenge.”

“I definitely think it’s going be a close game but I’m always confident with we can win any game with the players we have in the squad.”

Another factor that adds difficulty for both sides is a short recovery period from recent mid-week games however Owen Baker remains confident that his side will be ready both physically and mentally for the challenge despite the tight turnaround.

“The boys have been working hard to keep themselves fit and fresh and we are lucky to have Will (Jordan – Strikers Head Physio) and Jamie (Wilson – Strikers Strength and Conditioning Coach) who do a superb job in managing the player’s fitness and niggles,” says Baker.

“I know the lads are enjoying playing these extra games compared to training and that’s no different this weekend.”
