Strikers gear-up for return to action against SC Wanderers

Jul 24, 2020 by

After 4 months of suspended play, the Brisbane Strikers return to NPL QLD action tomorrow night taking on the Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Perry Park, with club captain Jake McLean saying the team are excited to get back into competitive football.

Sunshine Coast enjoyed a historic season in 2019, winning the FQPL premiership and getting themselves promoted to NPL in the process.

“Sunny Coast first up is a very tough game,” says Strikers coach Owen Baker.

“They proved how good a team they are last year in FQPL and they’re always very well set up by Arnie (Paul Arnison).”

“It will be a good one to watch but from our point of view we will have to be switched on from the start.”

Club Captain Jake McLean says his side are well prepared to return to league football despite the long layoff.

“I think no matter how much pre-season training you do it always takes a few competitive games to reach full match sharpness,” says McLean.

“In saying that every club is in the same situation and we have prepared really well for the last 6 weeks with training and a few friendly games, so we go into this weekend with good levels of fitness and confidence.”

“The boys have shown fantastic attitude and enthusiasm since coming back so hopefully that can be translated into a positive result on Saturday.”

Strikers will also be strengthened by the additions of two new signings in the form of Liam Cosgrove from Moreton Bay United and Ethan Docherty from Bentleigh Greens.

“It’s great to be able to bring those two in, Dochs (Ethan) is someone who knows the club well from when he was here previously in 2017 and is a fantastic player and Liam is someone who I’ve known for a long time, another great player with a lot of versatility and experience in this competition,” says Owen Baker.

“Importantly they are both also great characters to add to the dressing room.”

Please be aware of the following for the game:
