Strikers extend winning streak to three with emphatic win against Lions

Aug 16, 2020 by

The Brisbane Strikers continued their excellent recent run of form last night, beating Lions FC 2-0 at Perry Park thanks to a brilliant team performance.

Coming into the match Lions were undefeated in NPL QLD and sitting in first place on the table while Strikers had won both of their previous two matches against Redlands and Olympic respectively.

The match began very evenly with both sides showing moments of quality in possession while also being solid defensively.

It seemed as though the game was destined to be deadlocked going into the half time break before Strikers drew first blood as Jake McLean latched onto a rebounded Ryan Palmer shot, tapping the ball into an empty net.

That goal meant Strikers took a 1-0 lead into the half time break which seemed to boost their confidence once play resumed, beginning the second half on the front foot.

This pressure quickly paid off as Ethan Docherty got himself on the end of a perfect Jake McLean cross to grab his first goal since returning to Strikers from Victoria.

Not content with their two-goal lead, Strikers continued to push for more, coming close on multiple occasions as Will Kerambrun was denied a well-deserved goal by a fantastic goal-line clearance from Lions center-back Matija Simic.

Nevertheless, Strikers ran out 2-0 winners after a dominant performance, making big a statement of intent as they continue their rapid ascent up the NPL ladder.

“It was a great shift from the boys, to get wins against Olympic and Lions back-to-back shows that we have the quality to match it with the other big teams in the NPL,” said club captain Jake McLean.

“The energy of the boys has been great since the break, the competition for places in the team is really high and Owen has been driving the enthusiasm of the squad which is giving us the belief and confidence that we need.”

“Power are obviously a good side but we’ve shown these last few weeks that we can match it with anyone, so we are confident that we can go there and get another three points and I back us to do so.”

43’- Brisbane Strikers- Ryan Palmer hit a shot from the edge of the box which was parried by Lions keeper Luke Borean before Jake McLean snatched up the rebound and broke the deadlock.

52’- Brisbane Strikers – Jake McLean swung in an inch-perfect cross from a free-kick which Ethan Docherty met with a towering header to double Strikers’ advantage.

E-Z-Go Man of the Match

Chris Maher was named E-Z-Go Man of the Match after an eye-catching performance against his former club. The fullback covered every blade of grass, locking down the right side of our defence while also being a constant threat going forward. Maher showed exactly why he is held in such high regard among supporters of Football in Queensland and continues to be a linchpin of Owen Baker’s side.

Coaches’ Reaction

“It was an immense performance by our players, we are so proud of them to back up after the Olympic win last week in this way, it’s just fantastic.”

“Our lads have shown a great attitude in training and we do have a good group here with quality all over the park.”

“We’ve got a tough run of games to come and we want to keep the run of form going against Power next week, they’re a great team and we’ll do our homework.”

“Power have quality all over the park and we have to respect and be prepared for that, it should be a good game.”

“The most important thing for us is that we focus on ourselves, we’re going to go to Power and try to come away with a result and if we apply ourselves like we did tonight there’s every chance.”
