Strikers eager to build on derby win against Moreton Bay

Oct 02, 2020 by

The Brisbane Strikers will face Moreton Bay United following an impressive 2-1 victory over rivals Brisbane City last weekend.

Moreton Bay have been one of the competition’s form teams of late, enjoying wins over Lions FC and Sunshine Coast Wanderers in their two most recent matches.

The Jets also came out on top when these two sides met earlier in the season, beating Strikers 4-1 at Perry Park in February.

“Moreton Bay away is arguably one of the toughest fixtures of the calendar – they are in great form and it’s going to be an extremely tough game,” says Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker.

“We have worked hard through the week on how we approach the game and I know the players are relishing the opportunity to play in such a competitive game.”

The game might also mark a significant milestone for Strikers midfielder Ryan Palmer who, if selected, will make his 100th first-team appearance for the club.

“It’s honour and a privilege to have played for so long at such a great club,” says Palmer.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have played with some great players in the first team who have contributed massively to where I am now.”

Owen Baker, who began working with Palmer as a coach in Strikers’ U15 side when he joined the club as a foundation NPL player in 2013, says he is yet another example of the club’s ability to produce excellent players from the academy.

“Ryan joined our club as a skinny 14-year-old boy, he’s now a little less skinny 22-year-old man and I’m extremely proud of him,” says Baker.

“We have come on an incredible journey together but watching him develop as a great young footballer and more importantly a great bloke has been a pleasure to watch.”

“He is a credit to this club, he works so hard, always puts the team first and will do anything for his teammates.”

“I’m hoping he scores a goal this weekend to celebrate such a wonderful achievement and hopeful he has 100 more great performances for our club.”
