Steel, McLean Seal The Points For Strikers In Cairns

A goal in each half from Braedon Steel (pictured) and Jake McLean earned Brisbane Strikers a hard-fought 2-0 win over Cairns FC at Barlow Park in Cairns last night.

Steel put Strikers ahead seventeen minutes into the contest with his first goal for Strikers’ senior team when he pounced on the scraps from a goalmouth scramble after defender Michael McGowan’s header from a corner kick had been scrambled clear off Cairns’ goal line.

Strikers controlled large parts of the game but nevertheless endured a few anxious moments as the home side strove for an equaliser.  An improved defensive performance in which young goalkeeper Tomi Mesaric played his part helped Strikers keep a clean sheet before midfielder McLean slotted Strikers’ second goal from a direct free kick with two minutes remaining.

The win reversed the result between the two teams at Perry Park only three weeks ago, when Cairns FC won 5-3, and kept Strikers’ finals hopes alive as they closed the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Moreton Bay United to five points.
