Skipper Set For Semi Final Showdown

Oct 01, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers captain Jake McLean says his team are in it to win it and will not take a backward step in their FFA Cup Semi Final.

Brisbane Strikers host Hyundai A-League powerhouse Melbourne City in the penultimate stage of the national knock-out competition on Tuesday night at Perry Park.

A win for the hosts will see them become the first ever National Premier Leagues club to reach the Final in the competition’s six-year history.

McLean said despite his side being widely viewed as underdogs for the clash, the team will back their ability against their full-time opponents.

“We want to take the game to them straight out of the gate and not take a backward step,” McLean promised of his side’s approach.

“We know if we sit off and invite pressure it will allow their players to have a lot of time on the ball and build their way into the game and that won’t do any good.”

He added, “Everyone knows that Brisbane Strikers likes to play a positive brand of football and that we back our ability in every game we play.”

“That doesn’t change whether it is in the NPL, the FFA Cup or any other competition – we play our football to win.”

With Brisbane Strikers already accounting for Wellington Phoenix in the FFA Cup Round of 32, McLean said he sees no reason why they cannot replicate that feat against Melbourne City.

“All our games so far this year have been tough and we recognise that Melbourne City are a bit higher caliber again,” he said.

“But, at the end of the day, it is our eleven men against their eleven men we are looking to compete and win our battles across the field.”

“Training has been good and I think we have prepared well. The players are looking sharp and are excited for the game.”

McLean added that as captain he would be delighted to see his team become the first from outside the Hyundai A-League to qualify for an FFA Cup Final.

“We are focused on the job at hand and not getting ahead of ourselves but at the same time we recognise the possibilities of this game.”

“To be the first National Premier Leagues team in the FFA Cup Final would be huge and something that would be forever remembered as the competition continues to grow in future years.”

Brisbane Strikers have won 7 straight matches in the FFA Cup this year to progress to the Semi Final stage – eliminating National Premier Leagues Queensland Premiers Lions FC and Champions Gold Coast Knights on their qualifying path.
