Returning Captain Says ‘Strikers Way’ Delivers Many Leaders

Dec 02, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers midfield maestro Jake McLean may wear the captain’s arm band but admits his job is made easier by the support of the club’s strong leadership group.

The 26-year-old playmaker is one of ten players from last year’s Brisbane Strikers team that have confirmed their return for next season to build on a history making 2019 for the club.

McLean proved instrumental to Owen Baker’s side in his first season as captain – delivering 9 goals and 27 assists as he led the team to the FFA Cup Semi Finals for the first time.

2020 will be McLean’s fifth campaign with a Brisbane Strikers club he has represented on the national stage in four highly successful campaigns across the FFA Cup and National Premier Leagues competitions.

He explained that he feels an intrinsic connection to the Brisbane Strikers after playing over 100 games in the club’s famous yellow and blue kit.

“It’s great to have re-signed for a fifth year with Brisbane Strikers – I have never been at a club for that long before,” McLean explained.

“The club has always been loyal to me and there is only one club I wanted to play for in Brisbane.”

“I and all the lads just get so much support from this club and I feel it would’ve been silly for me to leave really.”

McLean’s return was enthusiastically welcomed on social media by Brisbane Strikers supporters, who recognise his status as one of the lynchpins of the team’s widely praised style of play.

“For me, I just want to do whatever I can to help the team win. I pride myself on always looking to improve my passing range and execute passes others don’t see,” he explained.

“I always want to get as many assists as possible and I look forward to trying to do it again next year and also chip in with as many goals as I can as well.”

A Triumvirate Of Leaders Key To Strikers

McLean is the designated on-field leader on the pitch for Brisbane Strikers but is not the demonstrative

His subdued leadership style is based on leading by example but he explains he is not alone in ensuring the Brisbane Strikers’ high expectations are met in training, in the dressing rooms and on the pitch.

“I am who I am and I don’t think that trying to be something you are not just because you are wearing the captain’s armband makes you a better player,” he explained.

“I am the captain in the traditional sense but there really is a leadership group that all bring something different to the team and we really complement each other.”

“Chris Maher is a natural leader and likes to take the warm-ups and is obviously quite vocal on the pitch.”

“And then you have Michael McGowan, who demands respect and gets it from all the boys, and everyone looks up to him for his effort and work ethic.”

“But I think so many of the boys are really good about taking responsibility and holding themselves to a high standard. It is something that I have seen at Brisbane Strikers over the years and is a big part of what the club is about.”

Baker Says McLean Is Exceptional

For Brisbane Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker, McLean’s return for 2020 ensures further stability in his squad as he prepares for his second full year in charge.

He admits that McLean’s skill set on the ball ensures a multi-faceted approach to his Brisbane Strikers’ attack next season.

“I am truly delighted club captain Jake Mclean as recommitted for his fifth year at Brisbane Strikers,” the 29-year-old said.

“Jake is an exceptional footballer and has excellent ability to play killer passes and combinations that set up so many of the attacks and goals for our team.”

“He can create something out of nothing and I’m looking forward to watching him link up and continue to grow his relationships with our other forwards.”

“Jake has a calming confidence about him and a strong focus on his job and I like how that rub’s off on the other players in the team.”

“He leads from the front in that sense, while still demanding the highest of standards in everything we do,” Baker concluded.
