A valiant Brisbane Strikers have fallen to a frustrating 3-0 defeat to Gold Coast Knights in the National Premier Leagues on Saturday night.

Backing up just days after their penalty shoot-out FFA Cup win, Brisbane Strikers proved less clinical than their fresher opponents at the Croatian Sports Centre in a match marred by blustery conditions.

Brisbane Strikers dominated the early scoring chances before Roman Hofmann delivered the hosts a single goal half-time lead in the hard-fought contest.

Further goals to Adam Endean and Max Brown then sealed the win in the second half for Gold Coast Knights.

Brisbane Strikers coach Owen Baker fielded a number of squad players in the clash as he balances his side’s commitments in two competitions.

The result brings to a close a three-match winning run for Brisbane Strikers in all competitions.

Michael McGowan – the burly defender backed up strongly with a tireless 90 minutes in the backline to stifle the Knights attackers for extended periods of the match.

“Physically and mentally it was always going to be tough. I was happy with how we started but we missed a couple of chances and it might have been different if they went in. It was good to get more minutes into a few players but we will be a better for a full week’s recovery ahead of the next game.” – Owen Baker, Brisbane Strikers head coach

The match marks Brisbane Strikers first defeat on the Gold Coast in over two years.

Brisbane Strikers will return to Perry Park next weekend to host cross-river rivals – and fellow FFA Cup Round of 16 qualifiers – Olympic FC in the National Premier Leagues.
