QSL Draw – Current 23.01.2012

The draw for the 2012 QSL season was released today and, as is seemingly always the case, it contains a mixture of pluses and minuses for the Brisbane Strikers and their supporters.

The competition will again feature the nine teams who finished the 2011 season, each of whom will play each other three times in a 24-game regular season calendar kicking off on 10 March. This year, however, the finals series will be trimmed from six teams to four, with the Grand Final scheduled for the weekend of 13 and 14 October.

On the plus side of the ledger for the Brisbane Strikers, they will get their season underway with two consecutive home games – against Gold Coast Stars on Saturday, 10 March followed by the Whitsunday Miners on 17 March.

On the negative side, the Strikers are going to have to be ready to hit the ground running. The Stars were one of only two teams to beat the Strikers in both home and away fixtures last year, while the Miners were the competition’s most improved team. And if the first two weeks are not challenging enough, the subsequent away match against reigning champions Sunshine Coast Fire and home fixture against the Queensland Academy of Sports will ensure the Strikers have a tricky opening month to their campaign.

Also thrown into the mix are two arduous trips to far north Queensland to play the FNQ Bulls in Mareeba, and two visits to Stockland Park to play the champions on their home turf. The Strikers are also the last team to have the bye, which means that they will have to sit out the last week of the season while final league placings are fought out by the other teams in Round 24. The Strikers will have to have made their pitch for the championship by then, culminating with a Round 23 closing fixture at Perry Park against the North Queensland Razorbacks.

Strikers supporters will also notice that there is one significant change to the time of their team’s fixtures. While all home fixtures will again be played on Saturdays, kick off time will be an hour earlier, at 6.00 pm, than Strikers supporters have been used to for many years.

Strikers Chairman Bruce Atterton-Evans said today that the earlier kick-off time had been determined after consultation with Strikers season ticket holders and in consideration of the club’s affiliated juniors and their families.

“A 6.00 pm kick-off will make it easier for our juniors and their parents to attend the games because the kids will not be kept out as late, while it will also be easier for people to go out after the game, meaning that they have more options on their Saturday night”, Atterton-Evans said.

“For example, if you’ve got a party to go to you should be able to go to the game first and then go to the party, because most things in Brisbane on a Saturday night don’t get going until at least 8.30”.

Mr Atterton-Evans also said the club intended to release its season ticket deals within the next week or two.
