Preview – Brisbane Strikers v Peninsula Power

Feb 22, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers are eyeing their first home win of the season when they host National Premier Leagues newcomers Peninsula Power on Saturday night at Perry Park.

With both sides boasting undefeated starts to 2019, the fixture looms as the toughest of the season to date for Brisbane Strikers.

Brisbane Strikers come into the contest on the back of strong form, with last week’s 4-0 win over Sunshine Coast FC the largest winning margin for any club so far this season.

Currently sitting third on the league table, a win will see Brisbane Strikers equal their best ever start to a National Premier Leagues season after notching 10 points from four games in 2015.

Peninsula Power are currently second on the league table after notching three straight wins to commence their maiden National Premier Leagues season.

A win for Brisbane Strikers would secure a second straight week in the competition’s top four, and could see them move top of the table depending on other results.

Strikers To Watch

  • Fullback Josh Wilson is reveling in his first season with Brisbane Strikers after coming to the attention of New Zealand Under 20’s selectors in recent weeks. He believes the team are only set to get better as the season progresses.
  • Striker Andy Pengelly is in strong early season form with four goals from three appearances. His brace last weekend against Sunshine Coast FC earned him his first selection in the National Premier Leagues Queensland Team of the Week.
  • Goalkeeper Bon Scott is aiming to build on his first clean sheet of the season last weekend against Sunshine Coast FC after a number of impressive saves in the early rounds of the season.

  • Recent meetings between the clubs have been limited to cup competitions, with the teams not playing in the same league competition since Brisbane Strikers were promoted to the Queensland State League in 2008.
  • Peninsula Power emerged victors the last time the teams clashed – prevailing 3-0 in last year’s FFA Cup Preliminary Round tie at AJ Kelly Park in Redcliffe
  • Brisbane Strikers are undefeated in league matches against Peninsula Power, winning on both occasions when the sides both contested the Brisbane Premier League in 2007 – including a 4-1 win at Perry Park.

Our Opponents

  • Peninsula Power are contesting their first ever season of National Premier Leagues football after earning promotion from the third tier Football Queensland Premier League last year on the back of an undefeated league season.
  • Peninsula Power retain the majority of the squad that failed to be bettered in league competition last year, including players with previous National Premier Leagues experience in former Redlands United duo Alex Warrilow and Ramone Close.
  • Another with National Premier Leagues experience is midfielder Sam Cronin, who is proving somewhat of an early season talisman for the Peninsula Power after scoring the winning goal in the team’s come-from-behind wins over Lions FC and Eastern Suburbs.

Did You Know?

Brisbane Strikers currently boast an equal league-best defensive record, conceding just two goals from their opening three matches. Only Lions FC also average less than one goal conceded per game this season.
