Preview – Brisbane Strikers v Lions FC

Mar 15, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers are aiming to break their duck at home this season when they host Lions FC this Saturday night.

The defending National Premier Leagues Queensland Premiers head to Perry Park on the back of a four-match winning streak that has lifted them to fourth in the competition standings.

Lions FC’s form stands in contrast to an injury-hit Brisbane Strikers squad that has taken a single point from their past three outings and are yet to win at home from four matches this season.

Despite the disappointing recent returns, Brisbane Strikers come into the contest on the back of a promising shut-out of Moreton Bay United last week as Owen Baker’s new-look squad continue to gel as a unit.

Currently sitting eighth on the National Premier Leagues Queensland table, Brisbane Strikers could rise to sixth in the standings with a win over Lions.

Players To Watch

Chris Maher (fullback) – following a stand-out turn last weekend, Maher will line up against the club he helped to last year’s title. He said he will relish the additional responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband for the injured Jake McLean.

Bon Scott (goalkeeper) – the highly-regarded shot-stopper notched his second clean sheet of the season last weekend. That performance saw him become the first Brisbane Strikers player to secure a second selection to the NPL Queensland Team of the Week this season.

Matt Gordon (fullback/winger) – the wide utility will be eager to build on  his first start of the season last weekend, where his speed and creativity created plenty of headaches for his Moreton Bay United opponents.

Head-to-Head

Lions FC won both meetings with Brisbane Strikers last season on their way to the Premiers’ title – twice shutting out Brisbane Strikers including a 1-0 win at Perry Park in the corresponding fixture.

Prior to last season, Brisbane Strikers were undefeated against Lions FC in two previous competitive meetings – twice winning in FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds ties in 2014 and 2016.

Brisbane Strikers and Lions FC clashed in the Semi Final stage of the pre-season Kappa Silver Boot tournament earlier this year – with Lions winning 3-2 in a hard-fought encounter.

Our Opponents

Lions FC are coached by former Hyundai A-League player Warren Moon. In addition to last year’s Premiership-Championship double, Moon has also previously guided Eastern Suburbs and Peninsula Power to titles in the Brisbane Premier League.

Lions FC retain the services of two of last season’s stand-out players with captain and central defender Matija Simic and striker Marek Madle both selected to last year’s National Premier Leagues Queensland Team of the Season.

Lions FC fullback Josh Brindell-South boasts Hyundai A-League experience after previously playing for Wellington Phoenix in 2013, where a season-ending injury brought a premature end to his time in the national top flight.

Did You Know?

Lions FC coach Warren Moon was a member of the Brisbane Strikers squad in the final National Soccer League season – scoring in the club’s final ever match in the national top flight against Adelaide United in 2004.
