Preview – Brisbane Strikers v Gold Coast United

Mar 01, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers are aiming to return to winning ways when they host Gold Coast United on Saturday night at Perry Park.

Despite succumbing to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Peninsula Power last weekend, Brisbane Strikers’ seven points from the opening four rounds marks one of their best ever starts to a National Premier Leagues campaign.

The promising early season returns – which matches the start to the club’s last Premiership winning campaign in 2017 – comes despite the fourth placed Brisbane Striker being yet to record a home win this season.

Standing in their way of a first win at Perry Park this season is a Gold Coast United side that has found form in recent weeks and recruited strongly in the off-season.

With consecutive wins over Eastern Suburbs and Brisbane City, Gold Coast United have moved to eighth on the National Premier Leagues Queensland ladder.

A win for Brisbane Strikers will see them retain their position in the competition’s top four, with a move as high as second possible depending on other results.

Players To Watch

Bon Scott (goalkeeper) – the Brisbane Strikers gloveman was in top form last weekend against Peninsula Power to earn selection to the NPL Queensland Team of the Week. He will be eager to add another highlight to his early season form with a maiden home clean sheet this weekend.

Josh Matcham (winger) & Sebastian Scaroni (midfielder) – the bench duo have proved vital in their contributions as substitutes so far this season. Both agree that Brisbane Strikers’ approach to youth development is easing their transition to becoming consistent contributors to the team.

Jake McLean (midfield) – the Brisbane Strikers skipper will seek to lead by example as he looks to impart his proven resilience on his younger teammates and inspire them to return to winning ways.

Brisbane Strikers have won both previous meetings against Gold Coast United – scoring four goals on each occasion including a 4-2 win in the corresponding fixture at Perry Park last season.

Brisbane Strikers have only lost once at home to a Gold Coast-based opponent in National Premier Leagues football – a run that extends across matches against Palm Beach SC, Gold Coast City and Gold Coast United.

Our Opponents

Gold Coast United are coached by inaugural Hyundai A-League Premiership winner Kristian Rees – a previous National Premier Leagues Queensland Premiership and Championship winner with Palm Beach SC. Rees also played for the previous Gold Coast United incarnation in the Hyundai A-League.

Also boasting Hyundai A-League experience is former Socceroos defender Michael Thwaite. Thwaite won the Hyundai A-League Premiership and Championship with Melbourne Victory in 2009 and has played over 200 top flight games in addition to stints in Europe and Asia  – making him one of the highest profile signings in the competition’s history.

Experienced midfielder Justyn McKay is set to return to the Gold Coast United squad after making his club debut off the bench last weekend. McKay previously captained Palm Beach SC to their National Premier Leagues Queensland double triumph in 2014.

Did You know?

Gold Coast United coach Kristian Rees maintains close ties with colourful former Gold Coast United owner Clive Palmer – running as a candidate for the Palmer United Party in previous federal and state elections.
