Preview – Brisbane Strikers v Gold Coast Knights

Apr 21, 2019 by

A resurgent Brisbane Strikers return to league action in an Easter Monday showdown with competition newcomers Gold Coast Knights.

Returning to winning ways in recent weeks with strong home performances in the FFA Cup and National Premier Leagues, Brisbane Strikers tackle the in-form Knights at Perry Park.

The match will mark a test of the recent improvements in Owen Baker’s side as they seek back-to-back league wins for the first time since February and eye a possible move to sixth on the league table.

The match is the first ever competitive meeting between Brisbane Strikers and Gold Coast Knights after the glitter strip club was promoted from the fourth tier Gold Coast Premier League in the off-season.

A strong off-season recruiting drive has seen Gold Coast Knights make an instant impact in the National Premier Leagues – currently sitting third in the league standings.

Cade McDermott – the 18-year-old midfielder has taken his opportunity with both hands in recent weeks after scoring in both his league and cup debut. He says he is now determined to make the position his for the rest of the season.

Jake McLean – the Brisbane Strikers captain has gone from strength-to-strength since returning from injury with his lead-by-example approach seeing him recognised in the most recent NPL Queensland Team of the Week.

Chris Maher – another Team of the Week selection, the ultra-competitive Maher has proven his adaptability in recent weeks as he alternates between fullback and defensive midfield roles.

Gold Coast Knights are coached by former NPL Queensland title-winning coach Grae Piddick, who guided Palm Beach SC to a state league double in 2014 and also coached Knights to last year’s double in the Gold Coast Premier League.

The squad boasts a number of players with national top tier experience headlined by former Socceroos midfield marquee signing Mitch Nichols. The Hyundai A-League Premiership winner is complemented by former Sydney FC attacker Jarrod Kyle, and former Brisbane Roar wideman  Shannon Brady.

Knights also boast former NPL Queensland Golden Boot winner Sam Smith at the top of their formation. Smith topped the scoring charts in 2017 prior to a move to South Melbourne and currently leads his new club’s returns with seven goals in the league this season.

The match marks the first competitive meeting between the two clubs.

This season marks the first time Brisbane Strikers have competed against more than one Gold Coast team in a league format.
