Preview – Brisbane Strikers v Brisbane Roar Youth

Apr 12, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers turn their attentions to the National Premier Leagues when they host Brisbane Roar Youth at Perry Park on Saturday night.

Owen Baker’s side come into the contest after a morale-boosting 10-1 win midweek in the FFA Cup over Souths United – a record result for the club in the national knockout competition.

Brisbane Strikers supporters will be hopeful that winning momentum can be brought into the league after a frustrating run of six matches without a win in the National Premier Leagues.

Brisbane Roar Youth, who entered the season on the back of their first ever Foxtel Y-League Grand Final win in the summer, are also in the midst of a form slide after failing to take a win from their last seven matches in the National Premier Leagues.

They currently sit seventh on the National Premier Leagues Queensland table, while Brisbane Strikers are seeking to rise from a season low of twelfth in the league standings.

Fraser Hills – the dynamic midfielder delivered repeatedly in the midweek FFA Cup win and was directly involved in the build-up to five goals before being substituted. He has called on the team to bring that form into Saturday’s match.

Andy Pengelly – the young striker is looking to build on his club record six goals in the midweek FFA Cup tie against Souths United. The haul was the most ever by a Brisbane Strikers player in a single competitive match since 1994.

Gabriel Hawash – the versatile defender is beginning to find his feet in the Brisbane Strikers back line after coming into the side in March. However, he will face a tough test against the youthful energy of this week’s opponents.

Brisbane Roar Youth are coached by Jake Goodship, who took the reins from Drew Sherman following the team’s Grand Final win over Western Sydney Wanderers in the Foxtel Y-League in the summer.

Brisbane Roar Youth have fielded a number of players with Hyundai A-League experience this season including their captain Aaron Reardon, fullback Daniel Leck, striker Charles Lokolingoy and Izaack Powell, who earlier this year became the club’s youngest ever player in the national top tier.

Brisbane Roar Youth’s squad also includes a number of youth international prospects including New Zealander Emlyn Wellsmore and Australian Jordan Courtney.

Brisbane Strikers have won all five previous encounters with Brisbane Roar Youth in the National Premier Leagues dating back to 2014 – winning by a margin of two or more goals on each occasion.

Brisbane Roar Youth’s squad features a number of former Brisbane Strikers juniors – Lleyton Brooks, Brandon McMorrow, Tyson Martin, Aaron Reardon and Harry Talbot  joining the set-up at the Hyundai A-League club in recent years as part of talented player pathway.
