Pengelly Stoked With Golden Boot Win

National Premier Leagues Queensland record-breaker Andy Pengelly has expressed his delight at becoming the first Brisbane Strikers player to secure the competition’s Golden Boot honour.

Pengelly scored an unprecedented 41 goals in his 26 appearances in the home-and-away season – setting a new competition and club record for most goals in a single league campaign.

His achievements also included a league record nine goals in a single match against Sunshine Coast FC in July and a further 10 goals in the FFA Cup to date.

Pengelly said he was honoured to receive the award but also quick to ensure his teammates shared in the credit.

“I’m very happy to win the award,” Pengelly said, “It is what every striker aims to do at the start of the season.”

“Obviously, the service I have received from my teammates this year has been really good. It really has come from everywhere.”

“I am very fortunate that when I get into good positions to get that good service. Obviously, it makes it hard to score if you don’t have that, so I am grateful to the other guys in the team for sure.”

Brisbane Strikers head coach Owen Baker conceded Pengelly’s haul had exceeded his expectations after recruiting the 22-year-old during the off-season.

“Andy’s performances this year have been overwhelming and we are very proud of him,” Baker said.

“He is a very smart player in his movements and he works tirelessly for the team – not just in attack but also defensively.”

“He has often had to press very hard and defend very deep and he has done that for the team at the right times as well.”

Pengelly said he aims to add further facets to his game with the assistance of Baker and the Strikers coaching staff.

“Owen said to me at the start of the year I was the main man up front and I needed to score goals and thankfully I have been able to repay his faith in me,” he explained.

“I have really added some things to my game this year, but I am also working with Owen to continue to improve in a few areas too.”

Pengelly and his teammates finished the NPL Queensland competition in fifth position but their season remains alive with an upcoming FFA Cup Quarter Final clash with Moreland Zebras later this month.
