Palmer Ready for First Home Game of the Season

Feb 21, 2020 by

Strikers midfielder Ryan Palmer has expressed his excitement for the club’s first competitive game at Perry Park in 2020.

The Brisbane Strikers host cross-town rivals Brisbane City in a highly anticipated National Premier Leagues Queensland matchup this Saturday night.

This weekend’s game comes after Strikers were able to defeat Mackay based side Magpies Crusaders United away from home, in the season’s opening round, 2-0.

Having overcome difficult playing conditions and a well-organised opposition in Magpies Crusaders, Palmer says the win can be used as a building block for the 2020 season.

“I think we really came into our own in the second half and took control of the game,” he said.

“The new lads coming into the side all performed well and will continue to get more integrated into the team as they play more games.”

The midfielder is expecting an even tougher test against Brisbane City this week and believes a disciplined performance is required to come away with three points.

“They’re a really strong side and they’ve signed some real quality players, so it’s important that we stick to our principles and hopefully come away with a win in front of our fans.”

Having finished in sixth in last year’s NPL QLD ladder, Brisbane City have made several high-profile signings in the build-up to 2020, including former Brisbane Roar duo Matt Smith and Shannon Brady as well as 2019 FQPL Goalkeeper of the Year Chris Parsons from Ipswich Knights.

Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker says his side is not fazed by the challenge that City present and are excited to play in front of a home crowd.

“City are always a tough opponent, we’ve had a lot of very difficult encounters with them in recent years but our focus remains on ourselves.”

“We have done our homework and prepared well, so as long as we stick to our game plan, I think we can make a fantastic game of it and give the fans something to celebrate.”
