Owen Baker Confirmed As Brisbane Strikers 2020 Coach

Brisbane Strikers is delighted to announce that Owen Baker will return as the club’s senior head coach in 2020.

The 28-year-old is set for his second full-season in charge of the top team after a promising 2019 season that included record-breaking results and a return to the national stage.

Baker’s side also captured national headlines earlier this month when they eliminated Hyundai A-League club Wellington Phoenix from the FFA Cup Round of 32 in front of 1600 fans at Perry Park.

That match marked Brisbane Strikers return to the national stages of the knock-out competition after falling short the previous two seasons.

Baker’s successes this season also include two record-breaking results in the FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds and the National Premier Leagues.

In April, Brisbane Strikers notched a then club-record 10-1 win over Souths United in the FFA Cup – the club’s largest winning margin in a cup match in over 25 years.

They followed that up with a new all-time club record 12-1 win over Sunshine Coast in the National Premier Leagues Queensland in July.

Fielding a team bristling with up-and-coming talent, Baker guided Brisbane Strikers to a fifth-placed finish in the National Premier Leagues Queensland this season.

A number of young players developed by Brisbane Strikers Academy also saw their first senior minutes this season.

Baker’s return continues a long association with the club he initially joined seven years ago after moving from his native England in 2006.

He has previously coached the club’s Under 15 and Under 18 teams before serving two years as senior assistant coach.

Baker initially took charge of the senior team midway through the 2018 season and has notched 42 competitive matches at the helm for 25 wins and 4 draws.

He will seek to build on his 2019 successes in a highly-anticipated FFA Cup Round of 16 clash against Manly United at the end of the month.
