NPL Preview – Redlands United v Brisbane Strikers

Feb 07, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers are eyeing their first win of the 2019 National Premier Leagues season when they travel to Redlands United on Friday night.

The match is the first first away fixture of the campaign for Brisbane Strikers and will mark an early season test for Owen Baker’s new look squad.

Brisbane Strikers come into the match after claiming their first competition point in a frustrating last-start draw with SWQ Thunder.

That result left Strikers in sixth position on the National Premier Leagues Queensland table.

Their opponents, Redlands United, currently sit at the foot of the table after suffering a three-goal defeat to Brisbane City in the opening round.

A win will see Brisbane Strikers overturn a less-than-stellar record in early season road trips – winning just twice in their first match away from Perry Park in six prior seasons of National Premier Leagues football.

Strikers To Watch

  • Defensive midfielder Scott Halliday is looking to build on his competitive debut for the club last week and says the Brisbane Strikers style of play is set to bring out the best in him.
  • Defender Michael McGowan will be looking to build on a strong start to the season and secure a clean sheet against his former club, where he won the 2016 National Premier Leagues Queensland Grand Final prior to joining Brisbane Strikers.

Our Opponents

  • Redlands United were the only team in the National Premier Leagues Queensland not to score a goal in the opening round of the season.
  • Redlands United boast Brazilian pedigree in their technical ranks in the form of coach Cleberson Souza Santos, who played for top tier clubs Sao Paulo and Botafogo in his native country and also had stints at PSV Eindhoven and Wellington Phoenix.
  • Despite plenty of player turnover, Redlands United retain the services of their 2018 club leading goal scorer Shuto Kuboyama. He scored 19 goals last season but failed to find the net in his two appearances against Brisbane Strikers.

  • Brisbane Strikers claimed a league double over Redlands United in 2018. It was the second straight year they had taken maximum points from matches between the sides.
  • Brisbane Strikers boast a strong recent record against Redlands United at Cleveland Showgrounds – winning on their past three visits.
  • Brisbane Strikers have shut-out Redlands United in three of their past four meetings – only conceding one goal in the last 360 minutes of football between the sides.
