Mecca Bah Brisbane Strikers Man Of The Match, Round 1: Jake McLean

Feb 07, 2018 by

The very first player to have won the new Mecca Bah Brisbane Strikers Man of the Match Award has modestly suggested he hopes to play better over the course of the season.

Midfielder Jake McLean on the weekend became the first recipient of a Mecca Bah meal for two, courtesy of the restaurant’s sponsorship of the Brisbane Strikers Man of the Match, which is voted on by supporters at each home game.

McLean, who played a dominant role in Strikers’ midfield in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Western Pride FC and scored his team’s goal with a quality finish a quarter of an hour into the contest, said he hoped to improve on his performance.

“I think I played not too bad, but I’d like to be playing better through the season,” McLean said today. “But for the first game of the year, I’m quite happy. Hopefully I can kick on and improve a bit through the year and get a few more Man of the Match awards”.

McLean had a similar attitude about the goal he scored against Pride – he simply wanted more!

“I was happy with my finish, but I could have had a couple more if I was bit luckier,” he said. “Maybe a bit later on I will be putting those away, but it was good to get off the mark in terms of goals and hopefully there are many more to come.”

Looking ahead at enjoying the culinary reward for his weekend efforts, McLean admitted he was a novice in terms of Moroccan and middle eastern cuisine – but he thought he might be half way towards an appreciation of it.

“I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to that type of thing, but I like Indian and I like curry so hopefully it’s something similar,” McLean ventured.

He also said the announcement of Mecca Bah’s sponsorship had been favourably received among his team mates and that his own popularity among the playing group had risen since the weekend.

“There has been a bit of banter about who I’m taking to dinner and who’s going to get lucky,” McLean said.

“It’s a good thing to have, to get a bit more banter going in the dressing room and everyone is excited to have a chance of winning it”.

Our thanks again to Mecca Bah, who are providing free meals for two at either their Emporium, Fortitude Valley or Broadbeach Restaurants available to both the Man of the Match and a lucky supporter after each home game of the Brisbane Strikers.

Supporters are eligible through a draw of raffle tickets issued with every purchase in the Perry Park clubhouse after the game and our congratulations for Round One go to Sammy Killen, who took out the supporters’ prize.
