McLean Named Brisbane Strikers Captain For 2019

Midfielder Jake McLean will be Brisbane Strikers designated on-field leader in 2019 – confirmed as the club’s captain for the upcoming National Premier Leagues season.

McLean, 25, takes the captain’s arm band for the first time this season, replacing departed midfielder Michael Angus in the important leadership role.

The honour comes after another stand-out season for the goal-scoring midfielder, who was named in the 2018 National Premier Leagues Queensland Team of the Season.

McLean has also twice lifted league silverware for Brisbane Strikers – part of the teams that won the 2016 and 2017 National Premier Leagues Premierships.

He said he is looking forward to the challenge of guiding new look Brisbane Strikers that is bristling with young talent this season.

“I’m excited and definitely honoured by the challenge of being captain of Brisbane Strikers,” McLean said.

“I will play the same as I always do. I’m going to lead by how I play because I’m not very vocal in terms of screaming and shouting and carrying on like that.”

“Helping through the young guys will be important. I will individually talk to players where we need it and bring the team along as a unit.”

Reflecting on the pre-season preparations – commencing prior to Christmas and concluding with a third-place finish in the Kappa Silver Boot – McLean said he is seeing plenty of promise in the new look squad assembled by coach Owen Baker.

“We’re definitely starting to gel as a team and we’ve had a mix of results but they will all help us going into Round 1.”

“I don’t take too much notice of results in pre-season. It’s more about attitude and how the team is applying themselves.”

“A friendly is only a friendly but everything changes when you get to Round One of the season. That is when it is time to really turn it up and we want to do that.”

Brisbane Strikers commence their National Premier Leagues Queensland season at Perry Park against Toowoomba’s South West Queensland Thunder on Saturday, February 2.
