Martinez To Light It Up For Strikers in 2020

Nov 30, 2019 by

New Brisbane Strikers recruit Emilio Martinez is adamant his new club is the place to rejuvenate his career in 2020.

The 21-year-old attacking midfield is the first new addition to Owen Baker’s squad for the 2020 season after already securing the return of the bulk of last year’s FFA Cup Semi Final squad.

Originally from western Sydney, Martinez brings a professional pedigree to the team after previously being contracted to Brisbane Roar as a Hyundai A-League player in addition to a youth stint with Western Sydney Wanderers.

As a 16-year-old he was also was one of only six players worldwide to be added to the Nike Academy side in the United Kingdom where he played against youth teams from some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

With a strong desire to push his case for a return to professional football, Martinez said Brisbane Strikers will provide the platform for him to realise his ambition.

“Brisbane Strikers really stand out as a club because of the way they play their football. I feel it is the perfect place for me to rejuvenate my young career,” Martinez said.

“In their FFA Cup run there was such an emphasis on the team’s quick and creative play and Owen Baker’s philosophies as a coach. I wanted to be part of that approach and play alongside these fantastic players.”

“I think my attributes of quick passing and creating chances will work well with what is already in the team and we are seeing it link up already in pre-season. There is already a harmony there.”

He added that the training and set-up at Brisbane Strikers is not too far removed from what he has previously experienced in fully-professional environments.

“The support the club provides the players compares very well with the professional clubs I have been part of and seen. So I don’t see this season as a step back at all for me.”

Fitter Than Ever And Ready To Play

For a young player, Martinez exhibits the determination and deliberation that is more often seen in seasoned veterans that are unafraid to challenge the assumptions of the status quo.

His move to Brisbane Strikers comes after extended trials with European clubs where he was on the verge of signing professional deals.

Martinez said he views the season ahead as the platform to build on his promising start in professional football at a time in his career where playing minutes are crucial.

“I didn’t get to play as much I felt I needed to at Brisbane Roar. I wasn’t in the youth team but I wasn’t able to break into the senior team. I grew a little stale because of that and at the end I had a couple of injuries.”

“So last year I took a step back and made sure I got my body right and that was a good decision. I have never been fitter than I am at this moment.”

“But I didn’t want to rush myself in terms of my recovery and I didn’t want to rush in deciding where I needed to play my football at this stage of my career.”

“I feel that Brisbane Strikers is the perfect fit for me and I feel this season is going to be a big one for me because I need to be playing games.”

Baker Confident Martinez Brings Something New

Brisbane Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker he sees Martinez as a key addition to his team for the 2020 season as he plots the club’s return to finals football.

He explained his new young gun brings new elements to the team as he seeks to further evolve the style of play that captured the nation’s attention last year.

“We welcome Emilio to our club and I’m extremely excited to be working with him,” Baker said.

“He will add to the strength of our squad and we believe he has outstanding qualities that will complement our style that will also suit his game.”

“He is a natural left footed midfielder that will add balance to the way we attack and I’m looking forward to seeing him combine with our other attacking players.”

“He has already shown in pre-season he has an excellent attitude and work rate. I am very excited about seeing him play in the yellow and blue and I believe the fans should be too,” Baker concluded.
