Late drama sees Strikers complete come from behind win against Moreton Bay

The Brisbane Strikers earned their second win on the bounce last night, beating Moreton Bay United 2-1 thanks to a 93rd-minute winner scored by 19-year-old substitute Nic Webb.

Strikers were hampered by a number of injuries and suspensions to key players in the build to the game meaning starting debuts were handed to 18-year-old Josip Milicevic and 19-year-old Cooper McCormack who recently joined the club from Brisbane Roar Youth.

Despite fielding a depleted side on paper, Strikers showed no signs of weakness in the opening exchanges, matching an in-form Moreton Bay side stride for stride throughout the first half.

Both sides were very solid defensively in the first period meaning goalscoring opportunities were coming at a premium.

In one of the few openings of the half, however, an impressive run from Moreton Bay midfielder Jackson Courtney-Perkins ended with Linden Farr receiving the ball at the back post and finishing into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead.

That goal meant Moreton Bay took a 1-0 lead into the break and that Strikers would need to produce a big second-half performance to get a result from the match.

Despite trailing, Strikers played the second half with renewed intensity and confidence, controlling possession and working opportunities.

Mid-way through the half a clever turn from Cooper McCormack opened up space in Strikers’ attacking third before the forward found Aden Gardner who then sent through Ryan Palmer to slot the ball past Moreton Bay keeper Denver Crickmore and get Strikers back on level terms with 25 minutes still to play.

Strikers continued to put the Jets under pressure, but the hosts held firm with a 1-1 draw looking all but certain with 90 minutes gone.

However with mere seconds left to play a cleared Moreton Bay cross turned into a lightning-quick Strikers counter-attack, which saw Aden Gardner switch the ball to Cooper McCormack on the left wing who then found substitute Nic Webb on the edge of the box, working some space with a dummy before rifling the ball into the bottom corner to give his side the lead in the 93rd minute with his first-ever senior goal.

That strike was enough to see Strikers pick up a vital three points against formidable opposition away from home and now means the club are just three points behind Brisbane Roar Youth in fifth place on the NPL QLD ladder.

“We were disappointed going into half time 1-0 down but we changed a couple of things round personnel-wise and came out second half with the mindset that we could still win the game,” said Strikers midfielder Aden Gardner.

“We’ve looked a lot more dangerous going forward in recent times and it showed with us getting the win and what a way to do it in the last minute.”

26’ – Moreton Bay United – Jackson Courtney-Perkins carried the ball from inside his own half and delivered cross to the back post, picking out Linden Farr who slotted the ball in the bottom corner.

66’ – Brisbane Strikers – A brilliant turn from Cooper McCormack created space to run at the Moreton Bay defence, with the forward linking up with Aden Gardner who then picked Ryan Palmer to put the finishing touches on a wonderful team goal.

93’ – Brisbane Strikers – After Ethan Docherty headed away a late Moreton Bay cross, Aden Gardner picked and the ball and switched it out to Cooper McCormack on the left side. McCormack then knocked the ball into the path of Nic Webb on the edge of the 18-yard box who dummied to create space before rifling the ball into the bottom corner.

Man of Match

A late addition to Owen Baker’s starting line-up, Josip Milicevic grabbed his first-team opportunity with two hands producing a stellar display in the Strikers midfield. The 18-year-old showed no nerves on his starting debut, taking on defenders and playing killer passes in what a brilliant showing from Strikers all over the park.

Next Game

Strikers will return to Perry Park after three games on the road this Tuesday night, taking on Brisbane Roar Youth at 7:00 pm.
