Captain McLean Praises “Amazing” Teammates

Sep 21, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers captain Jake McLean has praised his teammates after his side’s unprecedented FFA Cup Quarter Final win.

Brisbane Strikers defeated Victorian club Moreland Zebras 3-2 on Wednesday night to become the first ever Queensland club to advance to the FFA Cup Semi Finals.

Ryan Palmer and Fraser Hills proved the heroes on the night after combining for all three of Brisbane Strikers goals – Hills netting the opener before Palmer delivered a brace with a further goal in each half.

Moreland Zebras twice reduced the margin to a single goal, however, a stoic defensive showing saw Brisbane Strikers seal the win and book a date with Hyundai A-League club Melbourne City in the next stage.

McLean said he couldn’t be prouder of the team’s performance in what proved a history-making night for the club.

“It was an amazing performance from the lads and they showed a lot of character,” McLean said.

“Moreland were a tough side and we knew we would have to battle it out for the ninety minutes.”

“When we conceded we bounced straight back. There was no doubt, the heads didn’t drop and it was a solid effort from every player.”

McLean also cited the support of the nearly 2,000 fans that brought a cacophony of support to Perry Park on the night.

“To have the support of Brisbane and our friends and family is monumental for the boys. It is our twelfth man and we are grateful for that.”

McLean has vast experience in the FFA Cup since its launch in 2014 but he is adamant this current campaign with Brisbane Strikers is the pick of the bunch.

“I’ve had a lot of good runs in the cup – and have previously lost a Quarter Final with Oakleigh Cannons – but to get to the Semi Finals with Brisbane Strikers feels amazing.”

He added, “We don’t just want to take part in the Semi Final. We want to beat Melbourne City and be the first NPL team to ever reach the Final.”

Fueling McLean and his teammates are memories of the club’s previous clash with Melbourne City in 2016, which saw the Hyundai A-League side fight back from a goal down to end Brisbane Strikers’ cup run that season.

“It was a close game and it wasn’t out of reach for us that night,” McLean recalled

“We have already beaten an A-League team this year and we know if we play our football and work hard then we can go with any team in Australia.”

“We will respect their professionalism and quality, of course, but we won’t put them on a pedestal too much. It is eleven players and ninety minutes on the pitch and we believe we can win,” he concluded.

Melbourne City will bring a raft of stars to Perry Park for the clash on October 1 – including Socceroos Jamie Maclaren and Josh Brillante.
