Brisbane Strikers Drawn At Home In FFA Cup Opener

Brisbane Strikers coach Owen Baker has welcomed the end of the club’s run of away cup ties as the club embark on their 2019 FFA Cup campaign.

Brisbane Strikers were drawn as hosts against third-tier Football Queensland Premier League outfit Souths United in Round 4 of the national knock-out competition following a draw by Football Queensland.

The match-up marks the first time Brisbane Strikers have clashed with Souths United since the 2007 Brisbane Premier League season.

However, it is the end of Brisbane Strikers long-standing run of away fixtures – with their last eight Preliminary Rounds matches since 2015 in the competition played away from Perry Park – that has Baker most excited.

“We’re very happy to grab a home draw. We seem to have been quite unlucky with that in the early qualifying rounds in recent years,” Baker explained.

“It will be great for the fans and players to be at Perry Park and hopefully we use that to our advantage and progress to the next round.”

Brisbane Strikers are vying for one of three qualification spots available to south-east Queensalnd clubs to the national stages of the competition.

As one of Queensland’s most successful clubs in the competition’s six seasons to date, Baker said the aim is to add to Brisbane Strikers’ three previous forays to the national rounds.

“The concept of the FFA Cup is fantastic and the club has had good experiences in the past in this competition and the players and supporters always love it,” he explained.

“But it is a different pressure to the league and we know we have to turn up on the day. We imagine it will be mid-week and we will not be taking Souths lightly at all.”

“I will be making sure I do my homework on Souths and we are as best prepared for them as possible.”

This year also marks Baker’s first FFA Cup qualification pathway as head coach at Brisbane Strikers, but he explains he is not without senior coaching experience in knock-out football.

“I was the caretaker coach in the national NPL Finals Series in 2017 when we took on South Hobart, Edgeworth Eagles and Heidelberg United,” Baker explained.

“So I know what it’s like to coach the team in a knock-out setting and I quite enjoy the cup format.”

The date and kick-off time for the match is yet to be confirmed for the match.
