Bon Scott’s Movember Campaign

Nov 01, 2019 by

Brisbane Strikers goalkeeper Bon Scott has revealed his personal motivations for participating in this year’s Movember campaign.

Brisbane Strikers is supporting Bon Scott in his participation in Movember – the annual men’s health awareness initiative launched in Australia in 2003.

Movember seeks to raise awareness and funding for men’s mental health and suicide preventation, testicular cancer and prostate cancer through a number of initiatives.

The 22-year-old Scott has opted to grow a moustache throughout the month in his efforts to promote the cause.

Since 2003, Movember has raised over $700 million for men’s health causes, research and treatment.

Scott is participating in Movember for the first time this year following the untimely passing of his uncle in September.

“My dad, Daniel, and I are getting involved to raise money for mental health,” Scott explained.

“In September, my uncle Lewis took his own life and no words can adequately describe the heartbreak and pain my family is living through right now.”

“I’ve always been aware of how important mental health is, but I never thought it would affect someone in my family in this way.”

“Lewis was loved by so many people – he had an incredible wife, four amazing kids and a family that cared about him more than anything – and he had so many places of support he could’ve turned to.”

“So, hopefully, by participating in Movember we are doing something that can help to stop this from happening to other fathers, brothers, uncles, sons and mates.”

Scott added that he sees team sports environments as having a positive effect on men’s mental health as well as their physical well-being.

“I think more can be done but, in my experience, I think football and sports in general are great tools for mental health,” he explained.

“Being a part of a team gives you a sense of community and someone to talk to if you need – whether it is a teammate, a coach, a physio or whoever in that environment.”

“I am grateful to Brisbane Strikers for helping me spread the word about our Movember participation to more people and help raise awareness of men’s health issues.”

Scott’s progress in growing his moustache will be chronicled on Brisbane Strikers’ social media channels throughout the month of November, along with links to information on the Movember movement.

“I’ve only just grown a beard so I’m interested to see how dodgy my ‘mo’ is going to look,” Scott said.
