Baker says Strikers must show character against NPL Champs

The Brisbane Strikers are looking to recover from a difficult loss to Lions FC on Wednesday night in tomorrow night’s clash with 2019 NPL Champions Gold Coast Knights away from home.

Strikers have been in mixed form in recent weeks, having been hampered by injuries and suspensions.

Gold Coast Knights meanwhile sit just three points off first place on the ladder, with two games in hand on current league leaders Lions.

They are a side full of quality including former A-League star Mitch Nichols, Max Brown, and NPL veteran Jheison Macuace.

The home side will also benefit from extra rest during mid-week from their bye round, having beaten Capalaba away from home 3-1 last weekend.

This will be the second meeting between Strikers and Knights in the 2020 NPL season with Knights winning 2-1 at Perry Park in February thanks to a late Jarrod Kyle winner.

‘We’re thin and battling at the moment, but we have to show enormous character and fight this weekend,” says Strikers Head Coach Owen Baker.

“I’ll be asking the players to step up massively this weekend before we take advantage of the rest next week given we have a bye round.”

“We have some great characters in our changing room, and we need to lean and support each other to find the fight and produce a positive performance this Saturday.”

“Knights are a good team, but it’s on the day in this competition now.”

Strikers defender Matty Richardson also expressed his determination to make amends for the Lions defeat.

“We’re having games come thick and fast so we need every hand on deck and having players out doesn’t help but at the same time we can’t use that excuse because we go out expecting to win every game,” says Richardson.

“We always train well and if we keep doing that eventually, the results will come.”

“We treat every game the same whether its top or bottom of the table we expect to win, and I think we’re fully capable if we do our job.”
