Baker Happy To Be At Home For Season Opener

Head Coach Owen Baker is eyeing a positive start to Brisbane Strikers’ 2020 season following the release of the National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland draw.

Brisbane Strikers will host last year’s NPL Queensland Champions, Gold Coast Knights, at Perry Park in their opening match of the season on Saturday, February 8.

The match marks the third straight year supporters will usher in the new season at Queensland’s spiritual home of football.

Baker said is eagerly anticipating the start of his second full season in charge of the team after his side finished 2019 strongly with 10 wins in their last 15 league games.

“We are looking forward to commencing our season at Perry Park in 2020,” Baker said.

“Gold Coast Knights did extremely well last year and will be strong again this year. We know this match will be a good test for us early in the season.

“That being said, it is also a big opportunity for us to get an important three points and start the year with a win.”

Brisbane Strikers have not won their opening NPL Queensland fixture since 2013 – with four draws and two losses in their past six season openers

However, Baker says he has spent the pre-season plotting a way to consign the club’s stuttering starts to history books.

“We have changed our approach in the pre-season this time around and I think that will make a difference,” he explained.

“The players are looking forward to the opening game. They want to improve on what we achieved last year and I am confident that will come through on the pitch.”

Following on from the team’s historic FFA Cup Semi Final appearance last season – played in front of over 3,700 fans – Baker added he is also looking forward to the support from club faithful in the grandstand.

“The support we get from our fans is greatly appreciated and we are looking forward to seeing plenty in the stands to cheer the lads on opening night,” he said.

Baker’s side will follow their season opener with a trip to Mackay the following weekend to tackle Mackay and Whitsundays Magpies Crusaders United – where they won by 11 goals in their final away match of 2019.
