Angus Rejoins As Strikers Eye Bulldogs Rematch

With Brisbane’s fickle summer weather having taken a turn for the better this week, the Brisbane Strikers look likely to take the playing field at Richlands on Wednesday night for a re-match with the Capalaba Bulldogs in the Brisbane Roar Silver Boot tournament.

The match really cannot come quickly enough for the Strikers, who are desperate for some football under match conditions so that they can begin to remedy the problems that have plagued their pre-season preparation and showed up painfully in lopsided scorelines against Rochedale Rovers (1-7) and Capalaba (1-4) in their only two outings so far this year.

Those two games indicated that the Strikers were underdone physically and that they have a long way to go before coach David Large finalises his squad for the 2012 QSL campaign.

Changes to Large’s starting eleven on Wednesday are inevitable, given that centre half Nick Robinson earned a Silver Boot suspension for his sending off against the Rovers, and given that some triallists have moved on while others are waiting to stake their claims.

With the cancellation of Silver Boot fixtures last week making it virtually impossible for the Strikers to qualify for the second round of the tournament after the heavy loss against Rochedale, there is nothing more for the Strikers to play for against the Bulldogs than pride and reputation. But that should be no small motivation for the Strikers after the Bulldogs’ convincing win against them last time around.

Meanwhile Large, who had signed only Chay Hews to the squad prior to the loss to Rochedale a fortnight ago, has this week doubled his collection of autographs for the year. Flying, workaholic midfielder Michael Angus yesterday became the second player to sign on the dotted line and will go into his third successive QSL campaign in Strikers’ colours.

Kick-off in Wednesday night’s game will be at 8.30 pm.
