Brisbane Strikers is excited to announce Adam Pengelly as the club’s Under 14’s and Under 15’s coach for the National Premier Leagues 2020 season.

The highly-regarded Pengelly joins the Brisbane Strikers Academy following a three-year stint with Brisbane Roar, where he served as an Academy coach and assistant coach to the Westfield W-League team.

The 24-year-old AFC A-Licence holder is also currently working with the Westfield Young Matildas and Westfield Junior Matildas as an assistant coach and analyst.

Pengelly’s appointment is the latest signal of intent by Brisbane Strikers as it continues to invest heavily in junior player and coach development structures under the Brisbane Strikers Academy brand.

Brisbane Strikers Technical Director, Nacho Ferrer, highlighted how Pengelly’s blend of experience and credentials – which includes a Bachelor of Physical Education (First Class Honours) from University of Queensland – makes him the perfect choice as an Academy head coach.

“Adam has been working in an elite environment and is a very knowledgeable, structured and hard-working coach,” Ferrer explained.

“I am very confident he will set up a professional coaching environment for our players that complement the systems and processes we are implementing in the Strikers Academy as a whole.”

Pengelly said he is excited by his new role and will relish the opportunity to work under the highly-credentialed Nacho Ferrer, who previously spent six years with the Real Madrid Academy

“As soon as the opportunity came up to work with Nacho and Russell Hicks (Academy and High Performance Unit manager), it was certainly something I wanted to be part of,” Pengelly explained.

“In my experience Brisbane Strikers teams have always played the right way and I am really excited to be part of that going forward.”

“In the short term I want to make sure that in every training session and match I am improving players and, in the longer term, I am improving myself too as a coach.”

“I was very impressed by Nacho and the conversations we have had around football already have been deeply detailed and really positive.”

Pengelly’s role as head coach of both the Under 14 and Under 15 teams will see both teams regularly train with each other in line with Brisbane Strikers Academy’s whole-of-player training methodology.

He will be further assisted in his role by returning Strikers Academy Assistant Coach Chris Hicks across both age groups.

Ferrer explained, “We believe this is the best way to deliver the high-quality training sessions that will develop better players.”

“The Strikers Academy is determined to deliver game realistic training that challenges our players using a full field and develop problem-solving in addition to their technical skills.”

“By having more players and more coaches available to set-up and run the training sessions it will deliver the best outcomes for our players.”

Adam Pengelly is the brother of Brisbane Strikers attacker and current NPL Queensland Golden Boot winner, Andy Pengelly.

“The report Andy gave me about how the club is run is that it is a very professional and well-run club,” Pengelly concluded.

Further Brisbane Strikers Academy coaches will be announced in coming days by the club, including all National Premier Leagues and Skills Acquisition Phase teams.

Trials will be commencing soon for Brisbane Strikers Academy teams for the National Premier Leagues 2020 season.
